چکیده

A method has been developed for the quantitative determination of the composition of thermoplastic wood composites. The method involves area measurements of the two peaks in the derivative curve of a tracing produced by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of a thermoplastic composites sample in an inert atmosphere. This may involve the standard, constant heating rate-method, or the high resolution (Hi-ResTM) TGA method; both produce virtual baseline separation between wood and polyolefin peaks over a wide compositional range. Because this baseline separation suffers from a mutual effect on the thermal degradation of wood and polyolefins, best results are obtained if the parameters relating peak area with polyolefin content are different below and above 40% polyolefin content.

Highly Compatible Wood Thermoplastic Composites from Lignocellulosic Material Modified in Ionic Liquids: Preparation and Thermal Properties

A study of converting chemically modified wood into thermoplastic materials was undertaken to develop a new technology platform for the effective utilization of wood-based lignocellulosic materials. Highly substituted benzoylated spruce thermomechanical pulp (TMP) and lauroylated spruce TMP were used as components for thermoplastic composites of poly(styrene) and poly(propylene). Scanning elect...

Characteristics of regenerated nanocellulosic fibers from cellulose dissolution in aqueous solutions for wood fiber / polypropylene composites

The effects of aqueous solutions were evaluated on the properties of regenerated cellulosic nanofibers prepared from pure cellulose fibers in various formulations of aqueous solutions. Thermoplastic composites were prepared with reinforcement of the regenerated cellulosic nanofibers. The regenerated cellulosic fibers from cellulosic woody biomass were obtained from dissolved cellulose solutions...

Polystyrene/wood composites and hydrophobic wood coatings from water-based hydrophilic-hydrophobic block copolymers

D. J. Gardner Department of Forest Management and Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center, University of Maine, Orono, ME 04469, USA Abstract The combination of synthetic thermoplastic polymers and wood is normally problematic because wood surfaces are hydrophilic while typical thermoplastic polymers are hydrophobic. A possible solution is to use block copolymer coupling agents. In this work...

Stone-ground Wood Pulp-reinforced Polypropylene Composites: Water Uptake and Thermal Properties

Two of the drawbacks of using natural-based composites in industrial applications are thermal instability and water uptake capacity. In this work, mechanical wood pulp was used to reinforce polypropylene at a level of 20 to 50 wt. %. Composites were mixed by means of a Brabender internal mixer for both non-coupled and coupled formulations. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravi...

wood-thermoplastic interaction: microstructure and mechanical adhesion

The main objective of the research presented here was to relate anatomical features of wood species that affect the interactions between polymeric phases and performance of wood plastic composites (WPC). These interactions were related to the probable interlocking volume and surface area for stress transfer in a WPC. Composites were produced from different wood species and analyzed using SEM (s...
